Celestial Navigation

In junior high school,
a teacher once told us
that gravity was nothing
but a function of movement,
that when we leapt,
we came down in the
same spot because our
bodies were in perpetual
motion, and although
we tried to still them,
we could not.

Yet death will still all things.
Our bodies will cease their
flux and flow, bound
by gravity no longer,
drifting into the skies
like great gray balloons,
at last untethered--

This is where the idea of heaven
first occurred.
